A Gondola

This photograph shows a gondolier rowing a gondola in the waters across from St. Mark’s square. The picture was taken around 1870. To some extents the city has not changed at all: there are still gondolas, but now they share the waters with noisy motor boats and transports of all kinds and the traditional gondoliers have changed too. Just last year this closed guild that dates back to the middle ages admitted the first woman to its membership.
